JLT Help Sort the Wood from the Trees!

The Company

Metsäliitto is one of the worlds' largest forestry companies with yearly sales exceeding 9.3 billion Euros. The Group has five business areas supplying both industry and households with wood and wood products, pulp, paper, cardboard, tissue and baking products.

With 25,000 employees, the Metsäliitto Group operates in 30 countries and is a cooperative organisation for Finnish forest owners with more than 131,000 members.

The Challenge

Metsäliitto are not only committed to supplying the highest quality products but also to responsible sourcing of wood through sustainable forestry. They are governed by strict environmental policies which aim to reduce the impact of the Groups activity whilst developing and continuously improving production.
The company needed a solution which could manage and assist in the harvesting of more than 35 million cubic metres of wood annually. All of Metsäliittos wood needs to be monitored and traceable through each processing stage to optimise raw material usage and reduce administration costs.

Regular industrial standard PCs were too bulky for their vehicles and would not provide the reliability required to work in such extreme operating conditions. Each unit would need to cope with traveling along miles of uneven tracks and working at sub-zero temperatures.

The Solution

After an extensive internal evaluation with users and comprehensive testing Metsäliitto selected high performance rugged PC's from JLT. These exceeded all requirements for ruggedness and operating temperature range.

Using JLT PCs, Metsäliitto can manage each forest like a 'living' warehouse. The main forest is supervised as a primary storage area where each tree is fully monitored from seedling, through each stage of growth until it is a mature tree ready for logging and processing.

As JLT PCs have a full Windows operating system, Metsäliitto are able to use their existing software with the knowledge that their already extensive management software can be expanded whenever they need to.

The compact JLT PCs were fitted in approximately 1,300 harvesters, forwarders and trucks. The integration of GPS and GPRS provides a seamless end-to-end solution.

Benefits

Inventory control has improved, transportation costs have reduced and less capital is employed in the supply chain. Administration costs have also reduced and improved utilisation of stock has resulted in shorter lead times for customers.

The GPS and GPRS integration has lead to benefits in fuel costs and delivery efficiency.

By reducing drive times and increasing average load size CO2 emissions have also been substantially reduced.
